Beachside Paving in Indialantic

Asphalt paving in Indialantic means working in a compact beach town at the eastern end of the Melbourne Causeway. Indialantic incorporated in 1952 under the official name Indialantic-By-The-Sea. It sits on the barrier island between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, at about 13 feet above sea level, with just under a square mile of land.

Bridges to the mainland

Ernest Kouwenhoven, a Dutch settler, developed the area between 1919 and 1921 and built the first wooden bridge to Melbourne. A drawbridge replaced it between 1941 and 1947, and a modern causeway with elevated spans was built in 1985. Today US 192 enters town as Fifth Avenue, and State Road A1A runs through as Miramar Avenue.

Small town, older homes

In 2020 the town had 3,010 residents living in 1,586 housing units. Many homes are older, with narrow driveways and mature landscaping. Replacements, sealing and edge repairs are the most common jobs.

Barrier island conditions

Sandy ground, salt air and strong sun are the conditions here. A compacted subgrade and base keep the sand from shifting. Supported edges keep asphalt from crumbling. A coat of sealer every few years guards against the drying salt breeze.

Working near A1A and US 192

Both roads are maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation. Any driveway connection to them involves state right-of-way, which we check before scheduling.

What we pave here

Town permits

Indialantic is its own town, and we check its requirements for right-of-way work.

Sand and salt

Sand blows onto driveways here, and salt air dries out asphalt faster than inland. Sweeping regularly and sealing every two to three years keep the surface from wearing out early.

Edges on small lots

On small lots, driveways often run right up to landscaping or the property line. We protect walls and plants during the work, finish edges so they are supported, and keep everything on your side of the line.

Drainage

Indialantic is low and flat. We grade every driveway so water moves toward the street or yard and away from the house, and we keep the surface flush with walks and garage floors.

Older homes

Many homes in town have driveways that have been patched or overlaid several times. Too many overlays can raise a driveway above the garage floor. When that happens, we remove the old layers rather than adding another.

Business lots

Small businesses along Fifth Avenue and Miramar Avenue have compact lots with heavy turning traffic. We repair entrances full depth, seal and stripe, working around business hours.

What it costs

HomeGuide's national ranges are $5 to $12 or more per square foot for new driveways and $1 to $2 for sealing. We give a written price after seeing the site.

Close to the causeway

Indialantic sits right at the end of the Melbourne Causeway, so it is one of the quickest beachside towns for us to reach. Deliveries come straight across US 192, which keeps the asphalt hot and the job on schedule.

Indialantic Questions

Does my driveway connect to a state road?

If it opens onto A1A or US 192, yes. We check the state requirements before scheduling.

How often should a beachside driveway be sealed?

Every two to three years is common because of the salt air and sun.

Can you work around mature landscaping?

Yes. We protect plants and walls and stage carefully on small lots.

Years of overlays left my drive above the garage slab. Now what?

We grind or dig out the stacked layers and repave at the original height, rather than adding yet another layer.

How do I keep sand from wearing out my driveway?

Sweep or blow it off regularly, especially after windy days. Sand ground under tires acts like sandpaper on the surface and the sealer. A sealed driveway also sheds sand more easily than a dry, porous one. If sand drifts in from a neighboring dune or lot, a low border or landscaping at the edge can help keep it off the pavement.
